Fire destroys East Bremerton home, sends one to hospital

A smoldering cigarette destroyed an East Bremerton home and sent one man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle early Saturday morning, according to Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

Nine units from CKFR responded to the residential structure fire at 3 a.m. Saturday off John Carlson Road near Esquire Hills Elementary School. The person who called 911 reported the power was out and there was light smoke coming from the home’s electrical box, according to CKFR.

A working smoke alarm alerted the sleeping occupants and three residents evacuated the home, but the location of two other people was unknown.

Within seconds of the fire crews’ arrival, a person jumped to safety from a loft window as flames erupted in the back bedroom, according to CKFR.

The fifth person was sleeping in the open loft and exited the home through the front door. He sustained burn injuries and was airlifted to Harborview.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in five minutes and remained on scene until 5:30 a.m. searching for hot spots.

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office determined an improperly disposed of cigarette on the back deck smoldered and became embedded in the siding, sparking the heat and flames inside the walls of the home before erupting into a blaze.

The home was significantly damaged and the residents are being helped by family in the area.
