POULSBO — The fall season announced its arrival to the Northwest this weekend with signature rain and wind that taxed the region’s resources. Record-breaking rainfall hit the region beginning Friday night, dropping more than 2 inches in some areas. Rain came with heavy gusts of winds causing trees to fall, power outages and maxing out storm drains.

Puget Sound Energy crews raced to tend to outages over the north county region. Three outages, affecting 1,891 customers, came in the wake of Friday’s weather. That number rose to 76 outages by early Sunday morning, affecting 18,325 customers. By early Monday morning, PSE was responding to 55 outages affecting 6,663 customers.

The storm had emergency services on its toes as well. Crews with North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to 13 calls within 12 hours — twice the average number of daily calls — on Saturday following the first round of wind and rain.

Multiple trees fell across roads and power lines, including one tree that fell across Miller Bay Road at 8:32 a.m. Unable to avoid a crash, a car slid into the tree, but suffered minimal damages. There were no reports of injury.

Nearly two hours later, a tree fell into a house on Totten Road. No injuries were reported from the incident, though the fallen tree’s branches stabbed through the roof and into the living area of the home.

The wind tore through the sails of a boat in Agate Pass at approximately 11:36 a.m. The boat sent out a distress call. The North Kitsap Fire & Rescue’s boat was dispatched along with the Suquamish Police Department’s boat. The sailboat was ultimately aided by a passing vessel, which towed it to safety.

Exhaust from a generator at a home on Port Gamble Bay Road caused a small fire on Saturday, burning the home’s exterior. The generator was reportedly placed too close to an exterior wall.

A chimney also smoldered a portion of a beach home off of Shore Drive. Fire crews were able to extinguish the chimney fire before it destroyed the home or spread to neighboring structures.

Crews from the Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to a home on Heron Pond Lane after a carpet caught fire and charred the living room walls. Fire crews are investigating the cause, but it is assumed that an ember from an antique fireplace ignited the carpet.

Rain is expected to continue throughout the week until Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
