Fine clothes for Fideaux

POULSBO — If your Shih Tzu’s tutu is a little too loose or you’re looking for a tux for your toy poodle, then Christine Wilcher has just the right fit.

Wilcher, who owns and operates the Puppy Love Boutique in downtown Poulsbo, carries a wide range of dog toys, clothes and accessories, but has found a unique niche in a smaller arena of sorts.

“Many people have trouble finding things that fit their small dogs,” Wilcher said, pointing out that most large stores only carry things for dogs that weigh 10 pounds or more.

Most of her customers have dogs weighing five pounds or less and because of their diminutive stature, it’s often hard to find the right fit, she said.

“We have tiny, tiny stuff and we also have things for larger dogs as well,” she said.

With sunny summer days now a thing of the past, Wilcher said she carries a wide range of rain gear for dogs to keep them dry on rainy day walks.

In addition to carrying canine outdoor gear, customers can dress their dogs for special occasions and family pictures, she said.

“We have everything from pet carriers to shoes and we even carry sunglasses,” she said. “We have a lot of things I didn’t know existed until I opened this store.”

An example of the unique collection in the store is a small leopard-skin doggie bed, but the store also carries the more traditional bedding items as well.

“If we don’t have it, we can special order it,” Wilcher said, noting that the store’s Web site provides a good starting point for finding out what’s available for dogs.

For dog walkers who want a stylish way to carry poop bags, Wilcher said she offers a variety, including ones that come with matching accessories.

Every breed of dog is different and having a small store allows for one-on-one interaction to ensure that each customer’s individual needs are met, she said.

“We encourage people to bring their dogs in and try different things on, so we can make sure they fit,” she said.

With an extensive collection of doggie fashions, the store also carries an all organic selection of treats for dogs of all sizes.

“We also have a wide variety of shampoos and we also carry organic ear drops,” Wilcher said.

While the move from beneath the Bayside Broiler to Front Street has already increased business for the store, plans for expansion are already underway, she said.

“Eventually, we’ll have our own bakery where we can mix custom treats and do social times for dogs,” she said.

The Puppy Love Boutique is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The store can be reached at (360) 598-1646. Its Web site is www.puppylovebakeryandboutique.com.
