An officer was on route to a reported motor vehicle collision when flagged down by a man at 16th Street and Broadway Avenue Aug. 5 for a separate collision. The female who had hit him did not stay long enough to provide all necessary information.

The officer found the man at the intersection at about 3:53 p.m. and the man, a 30-year-old from Virginia, said he was driving south on the Warren Avenue Bridge when a female was driving too closely behind him and when he stopped for traffic, she collided with the rear end of his vehicle. They both stopped and the man said she immediately said she was late for work.

The man advised they should get out of the roadway so they both pulled off onto 16th Street. When he exited his vehicle, the female minor repeated that she was late for work and didn’t have time to exchange information or wait for law enforcement. The man took a photo of her license plate and they exchanged phone numbers. She left without providing her name, address, insurance information or driver license. A few minutes after she left, the man said she sent him a text message providing her name and license plate number although it did not match the one he photographed.

The officer was able to located the registered owner of the vehicle through the license plate number the man photographed and obtained insurance information, which was forwarded to the 30-year-old man. Because the female driver did not remain at the scene and failed to provide the man with her name, address, insurance or identification, the officer determined probable cause exists to charge her with a hit and run. The report was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
