Fathoms O’ Fun notches another year

The chilly weather didn’t dampen the spirits at this year’s Fathoms O’ Fun Festival parade.

“We kept our fingers crossed and it worked,” said Fathoms O’ Fun Festival Chairman Sharron King in an email. “We didn’t get rained on.”

The 45th annual Fathoms O’ Fun Festival Parade marched through downtown Port Orchard Saturday. The parade, Port Orchard’s largest of the year, included parade floats, drill teams, military groups and antique car shows.

The Grand Sweepstakes Award, the festival’s top award given to a group that was selected best by the Fathoms o’Fun festival judges, went to Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 2669.

Other festival float award winners included, Olympia’s Capitol Lakefair float, Sequim Irrigation Festival float, Forks Old Fashioned 4th of July Festival Float and Port Townsend’s Rhododendron Float.

Saints Car Club of South Kitsap won the best car club award in the judged category. The best car went to a 1931 Ford Model A owned by Ronald Thrall. Best commercial entry went to Tulalip Resort Casino’s float. Best dance and gymnastics team was awarded to Just for Kicks School of Dance.

King said many spectators donned coats and jackets along the parade route. Some of dancers said they actually preferred performing in the cool conditions.

Planning work will soon begin on next year’s event, King said.
