Applications are being accepted for next year’s Fathoms o’ Fun Royalty Scholarship Pageant, announced Helene Jensen, pageant director.

“This is an opportunity for young people who are interested in developing your leadership and public speaking skill, enjoy working with people and would like the opportunity to travel through out Washington, representing the Port Orchard community,” Jensen said.

After the applications are received, an evening meeting with applicants, parents, and Fathoms o’ Fun representatives will be scheduled to answer questions and provide additional information and will include the planned schedule of contestant appearances and royalty activities.

If more than 10 applications are submitted, a preliminary screening will be conducted.

“This will involve a private interview with each applicant by a panel of local persons,” Jensen said.

The 10 applicants with the highest scores will be eligible to move forward in the competition.

Each contestant must write and submit a double-spaced typed 200-word essay on a platform that explains their passions.

Jensen said the essay will be judged both for grammar and being read out loud. The speech must not exceed two minutes. Each speech must be memorized and will be delivered orally at designated judged events prior to the pageant.

Each contestant will be required to collect two teacher or community recommendations, she added.
