Farm Funk: Good food, good music, good mission

On Aug. 20, join the Kitsap Community Food Cooperative and Kitsap Fresh at a one-day festival designated to celebrating local farming, local brewing and local music in Kitsap County.

BREMERTON — On Aug. 20, join the Kitsap Community Food Cooperative and Kitsap Fresh at a one-day festival designated to celebrating local farming, local brewing and local music in Kitsap County.

Farm Funk 2016 is the first in what sponsors hope will be an annual tradition. Visit the by-donation festival for local artist vendors, hot food, craft beer, kids activities and more from 2-10 p.m. Aug. 20 at Minder Farms, 1000 NE Gluds Pond Road, Bremerton.

“Our area is blessed with fertile soil, unique craft breweries and a talented group of singers, songwriters and musicians,” according to the group’s news release. “Farm Funk will bring these worlds together and introduce local food, brewers and musicians to local consumers, patrons and fans.”

Hosted by two local food banks, the festival is an evolution of sorts from Kitsap Community Food Co-op’s previous festival, Fall Fair, according to Jess Sappington, membership and volunteer coordinator for the co-op.

Sappington said the co-op teamed up with Kitsap Fresh, “morphing the Fall Fair, in a way, into more of a festival-like event.”

Proceeds from the festival will go towards the two groups.

Kitsap Community Food Co-op, according to the website kitsapfood.coop, “is a grocery store that is owned by the people in the community, rather than by a corporation. This means you can buy everything you need and the money spent goes directly back into the local community.” Sappington said the co-op is hoping to use the proceeds to help to build a physical storefront as an expansion from their online store.

“Kitsap Fresh is an online farmers market co-op dedicated to Kitsap-grown goods,” according to its website, kitsapfresh.org. Sappington said Kitsap Freshwill be using their share of the proceeds to help expand their co-op.

“We want to be able to get out into the community what the different organizations are doing, what we’re about,” Sappington said. “We just want to have a nice community event available for families.”

In addition to live entertainment, including some youth acts, farm-fresh produce and locally brewed craft beers and ciders, Sappington said there will be face painters, balloon animals, kid’s story time, co-op veggie painting, games and more.

“And again, kind of getting back to the true mission to what the co-ops are doing … both trying to make local food, healthy food more easily accessible to the community in general,” Sappington said.
