A 32-year-old Bremerton man shot himself in his living room Feb. 23, but he and his girlfriend tried to cover up the accident, causing nearby Kitsap Lake Elementary to lock down.

Police were called to the 1100 block of Carr Boulevard at 12:48 p.m. on reports of a gunshot to the hand from an unknown shooter, according to Bremerton police reports.

The victim’s girlfriend, a 28-year-old woman, told officers she was in the house and the man was outside smoking when she heard a loud bang. She said the man came in the house bleeding everywhere, claiming he was shot in the hand. As a result of the reports, Kitsap Lake Elementary went on lockdown in the middle of the school day.

Police discovered a bullet wound that went all the way through the man’s left hand, looking like he was shot at close range. No blood was found outside where the injury reportedly took place, but blood was found all over the inside of the house.

After questioning, the woman told police she was lying and her boyfriend told her to lie to the officers. The man got a semi-automatic handgun from his brother and the gun went off when he was sitting on the couch. There was a bullet hole in the ceiling of the house.

Kitsap Lake’s lockdown was lifted and the man was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment.
