It’s hard to believe but summer has officially arrived and with it flying dogfish, a roaring bonfire, strawberry shortcake and of course Vikings.

It’s hard to believe but summer has officially arrived and with it flying dogfish, a roaring bonfire, strawberry shortcake and of course Vikings.

If this doesn’t sound like your traditional gatherings, which typically include cold drinks, a smoky barbecue, sun-baked potato salad and relatives you wished lived a little farther away, it’s because as far as seasonal activities go, Midsummer Fest in Poulsbo is a different gig.

First-timers to the small event at Waterfront Park will likely return for years to come. Why? It’s just plain fun.

The Sons of Norway do St. Hans’ Day justice and again manage to mix in some interesting traditions that involve smelly fish. While the members of the Sons spare participants from the wonders of lutefisk, they will expose many to an event that is not for the meek.

What does a dead dogfish sound like when it hits a pail from 20 feet? Show up and find out during the annual fisk kaste (fish toss). It’s pretty gruesome and kids participating in it will smell like wet beach dogs by its conclusion but, hey, what’s soap for?

If your stomach or shower isn’t up for that one, then the Little Norway Grandmother’s Club has the answer with everybody’s favorite strawberry shortcake during the group’s annual fund-raiser. Flying fisk, shortcake, and a traditional Viking bonfire to top off the event?

No, it’s not your traditional summer event but check it out once and it soon will be.
