The driver of a Ford pickup was killed April 10 when his vehicle left the pavement on J.M. Dickenson Road SW in South Kitsap and crashed into two large trees.

Witnesses who observed the accident couldn’t discern a reason why the truck left the roadway, according to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dep. Sheriff Scott Wilson.

Deputy Mike Shannon of the agency’s traffic unit is leading the investigation, which so far has gathered few clues. Traffic investigators said they “did not observe any obvious indications of intoxication,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The driver, Arthur Leroy Hart Jr., 52, of South Kitsap, died in the accident. Deputies said they don’t know if Hart was having a medical emergency at the time of the crash. They did confirm Hart was not using a seatbelt.

Witnesses reported that the truck was driving southbound on Dickenson Road SW, a two-lane, semi-rural road located west of, and parallel to, State Route 16. The driver veered toward the roadway shoulder and the truck’s forward momentum carried it over the embankment, where it collided with the trees.

The county forensic pathologist was scheduled to conduct an autopsy this week. When that’s completed, the county’s coroner will make a determination about the cause of the accident and how the victim died.

Shannon is asking people who might have information about the crash to call him at 360-337-4634. They can reference the sheriff’s office case report K16-003367.
