Donald Weedin left school at 17 to join the Navy during World War II | Passages

Donald Weedin passed away peacefully at his home in Poulsbo on March 20, 2011. He was 86. Don was born in Bremerton, Wash., on Feb. 10, 1925 to Max (Sr.) and Phyllis Weedin. Don left school the day after his 17th birthday in 1942 to enlist in the Navy and enter World War II. In 1958, he was stationed in Bogota, Colombia where he met and married the love of his life, Alicia Gonzalez.

Donald Weedin passed away peacefully at his home in Poulsbo on March 20, 2011. He was 86.

Don was born in Bremerton, Wash., on Feb. 10, 1925 to Max (Sr.) and Phyllis Weedin. Don left school the day after his 17th birthday in 1942 to enlist in the Navy and enter World War II. In 1958, he was stationed in Bogota, Colombia where he met and married the love of his life, Alicia Gonzalez.

After 30 years in the Navy, Don retired in 1973 in Oak Harbor. He and Alicia lived there for 34 years before moving to Poulsbo in 2003.

Don is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alicia; his sister, Gloria Balshaw of Hurricane, W.Va.; his children, Les Weedin (Karen) of Charlestown, Ind., Kathy Vuckel (Jim) of Auburn, Wash., Rita Paradise of Tacoma, and Dan Weedin (Barbara) of Poulsbo; and 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Max Jr. and Leslie.

Funeral service is scheduled March 25, 11 a.m. at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Poulsbo. Mass will be preceded by a rosary at 10:30 and followed by a reception. There will be a full military burial at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo at 2 p.m.

Donations may be made in Don’s name to St. Vincent DePaul Society, the John Paul Jones chapter of the SAR, or Hospice of Kitsap County.
