Beginning July 1, 2013, new garbage disposal fees will be charged at Kitsap County’s facilities-Olympic View Transfer Station (OVTS), and the Hansville, Silverdale, and Olalla Recycling and Garbage Facilities (RAGFs).

These new fees reflect the actual costs of providing these services, based on a recent study completed by the County’s Solid Waste Division.

The minimum fee at OVTS will increase to $15 (tax included) for up to 460 pounds of general garbage, also known as municipal solid waste or MSW. For amounts greater than the minimum, the fee will be $65 per ton, plus 3.6 percent Solid Waste Collection Tax. This disposal fee continues to be the lowest in the Puget Sound Region, and second lowest in all of Western Washington.

Other charges at OVTS include:

• Appliances ($16.50 each)

• Passenger vehicle tires ($5 each)

• Commercial truck tires ($8 each)

• Separated yard waste ($61.98/ton).

“We realize that this increase is significant for many people who self-haul their own garbage, but it is necessary for us to fully recover our costs in order to continue to provide these services, including the recycling services at these facilities which will continue to be provided at no cost to the customer,’ said Pat Campbell, the Solid Waste Division senior program anager. “We hope that residents will take this opportunity to reduce their waste as much as possible, and consider subscribing to curbside garbage and recycling services, which may be less costly and less time-consuming than self-hauling.”

Other fees apply to various other “special wastes” such as asbestos, contaminated soils, and creosote-treated lumber. For a complete list of special waste fees, see www.kitsapgov.com/sw.

At the recycling and garbage facilities, the fee for one 32-gallon can of garbage will be $8.60, plus 3.6% Solid Waste Collection Tax. The charge for each additional 32-gallon can will be $2.35 plus tax, and loose garbage is $20.57 per cubic yard . The fee for appliances at the RAGFs and at the Poulsbo Recycle Center will be $20 each.

Tires will no longer be accepted at the RAGFs, and there will no longer be a different fee for separated yard waste. Yard waste will be treated as regular garbage. Customers are encouraged to utilize local private companies who provide recycling services for tires and yard waste; for information click on “What Do I Do With It?” at www.kitsapgov.com/sw. Other charges at the RAGFs include:

• Mattress, box spring or recliner ($11 each)

• Sofa ($13.50 each)

• Sofa bed ($27 each)

• Roofing or drywall ($40 per cubic yard).
