An East Bremerton woman was scammed out of $2,600 last week after responding to a help wanted ad on Craigslist.

The woman told sheriff’s deputies that she answered a Craigslist ad from a man reportedly seeking an assistant for his Seattle art studio, according to reports from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. In e-mail correspondence, he told her that he was out of the country on business, but needed her to assist with a money transfer to a client. The woman agreed to accept a $2,600 cashier’s check, deposit it into her personal bank account and wire the same amount of money in cash to the man.

On March 4, the woman was notified by her bank that the check she deposited was fraudulent and she would owe the bank $2,600. She admitted she did not use good judgment and would report any additional information to law enforcement. Later that day, she receive a second check from another man unknown to her and reported it to deputies.
