Construction workers help firefighters free man from car in Suquamish

SUQUAMISH — A construction crew helped firefighters free a man trapped in a car Thursday morning in Suquamish.

The 83-year-old man told fire crews he had been filling his car’s gas tank at the Longhouse Deli Mart when the car unexpectedly began to roll. The man tried to climb into the car but it continued to roll, lodging between a large alder tree and a boulder. The man’s leg became trapped in the car door.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews arrived 11:30 a.m. and accepted an offer of help from nearby construction workers. The crew from Liberty Bay Excavating tethered the car to a backhoe to hold it in place while firefighters cut down the alder and freed the man.

The man was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for treatment. He was discharged as of Friday morning, according to a statement from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue.
