Clean-up Week slated next week in the city

City residents can participate in Clean-up Week slated for Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.

City residents can participate in Clean-up Week slated for Sept. 30 to Oct. 4. The city and Brem-Air Disposal schedule two annual clean-up weeks — one in the spring and one in the fall.

During the period, the city will provide a way for residents to dispose of mattresses, furniture and other bulky junk at a reduced cost. They can be placed along with other allowed items at the street curb with regular garbage cans.

Residents can pay in advance at the City Treasurer’s Office at City Hall, 216 Prospect St.

During the five-day period, garbage collection regularly is scheduled. Pick up is Oct. 1 in McCormick Woods and Oct. 2 in The Ridge. Garbage pick up for residents within the recent annexations is scheduled for regular pickup.

Stoves, washers, dryers, refrigerators and freezers can be included on the normal garbage day, but should be paid for in advance at City Hall. The items will be transported to a recycle site.

Fee for items can range from $20 for a furnace or sleeper sofa to $5 for a mattress or wheelchair.

City crews will not carry items from private property. There is no charge for collection and disposal of most smaller items. Items must be boxed, bagged, bundled or easy to handle.

Items that do not comply with city requirements will not be picked up or allowed to remain on the property or street.

The city will not pick up hazardous waste, construction or demolishing debris, roofing material, carpet, vinyl tile, cabinets, oil or paint cans, batteries, tires, car parts, boats, fluorescent lights, motorcycles or wood-burning stoves.

Household waste should go in the weekly garbage pick up. The city will not pick up any household waste.
