The state Department of Ecology is taking public comment through Nov. 22 on the Bremerton School District’s continued testing of soil contamination at Crownhill Elementary School.
Initial tests indicate that soil four feet below the ground and deeper contain contaminants including petroleum products, household waste, lead and industrial solvents, according to the Department of Ecology. The former sand and gravel mine was also used as a landfill before the school was built.
Contaminants were discovered in the soil at Crownhill in 1994 while the building was being excavated after a 1993 fire.
