CKFR calls up, looks at funding options for improvements

Call volumes were on the rise once again for Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue in 2023 with the district’s population experiencing continued growth.

A January CKFR report tallies the total incidents for last year at 11,384 with over two-thirds medical emergencies (7,737). Over 200 regarding both fire suppression and hazards were also reported, and 3,167 incidents were labeled under other. Those typically include false alarms, good intent and service calls. The total marks a small increase from the just over 11,000 calls in 2022.

CKFR finds itself juggling another anticipated increase for calls in 2024 along with the continued work to upgrade and build facilities primarily using funding from a voter-passed bond from 2020. With some stations put temporarily out of service for construction, response times have reportedly suffered in select parts of the district.

“Through the strategic planning process, the district is planning to responsibly improve our daily staffing levels to achieve three-person fire apparatus staffing,” CKFR said. “This will bring more personnel to the scene sooner.”

Response times should get a boost from the anticipated reopening of Station 45 off Trenton Avenue and the opening of Station 57 off NE Coho Run, especially for responses to the Seabeck area. Station 51 in Silverdale is expected to be finished in 2025.

CKFR is considering other funding options to help with costs of improving service.
