City Council ponders vehicle license fees to help fund transportation projects

The Port Orchard City Council has scheduled a public hearing June 28 to receive comments from the community about a proposed imposition of vehicle license fees through council action.

The council proposes a maximum fee of $20 per vehicle, which it can impose without a public vote, or a maximum of $100 per vehicle per voter approval.

The fees would be used to help fund the city’s top-priority transportation improvements such as completion of the Tremont Corridor, which could be in danger if the city is forced to refund the federal government $3.2 million if ground isn’t broken on the project in the next two years.

The badly needed Bethel Avenue Corridor widening project also is high on the city’s transportation list.

The public hearing will be included in the council’s regular meeting June 28 at 7 p.m., in City Hall, 216 Prospect St., in Port Orchard.
