‘West Side Story’ at Klahowya: Klahowya Secondary School’s vocal and drama departments will perform the musical, “West Side Story,” Friday and Saturday and March 10-12. All shows begin at 7 p.m. and will be at the school’s theater, 7607 Newberry Hill Road NW, Silverdale. Tickets are available at the Klahowya Bookkeeper’s office or at the door. Student tickets cost $10 and general admission is $12. The musical is recommended for ages 12 and older.

AAA Driver Improvement Program in Bremerton:

There will be a AAA Driver Improvement Program from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 26 at the Westside Improvement Club, 4109 E St., Bremerton. It will be a refresher course on defensive driving skills and successful course completion will qualify drivers 55 years and older for automobile insurance discounts. The cost is $16 per person and pre-registration is required. Call 1 (800) 462-3728 for enrollment information.

Free income tax return preparation and filing:

The Internal Revenue Service and AARP are sponsoring a free program staffed by volunteers to prepare and file income tax returns electronically that runs through April 15. Taxpayers must bring photo identification, Social Security cards for all person on the tax return, all 2010 tax documents and a checkbook or other document from a financial institution that shows routing and account numbers for direct deposit or refunds. The program is intended for elderly and low-income families but all taxpayers are welcome. Returns with significant business income or loss, any rental income or first-time homebuyer credit are beyond the scope of the program.

There will be tax aid available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays at Sheridan Park Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton. Another Bremerton location will be at Olympic College in Room A-122C, 1600 Chester Ave., from 12:30 to 4:40 p.m. Tuesday through Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. In Silverdale, there will be help available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Silverdale Community Center, 9729 Silverdale Way NW.

Sons of Norway dinner:

The Sons of Norway in Bremerton will celebrate the Irish in everyone with a dinner of corned beef and cabbage at 5 p.m. March 10 at the Oslo Lodge, 1018 18th St. A presentation of Lanny and Deanna Dowell’s travels in Ireland will follow the dinner. Non-members are welcome to attend and are asked to call (360) 373-1503 by Wednesday to assure there will be enough food available.

Kitsap GOP:

The Kitsap County Republican Party will host its annual Lincoln Day Dinner March 11 in the Bremer Student Center at Olympic College in Bremerton. A social hour with bar provided by Cloverleaf Sports Bar and Grill will begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Kirby Wilbur, former radio talk show host, will be the guest speaker. There will also be a silent auction. The cost is $45 for the event.

Kitsap Regional Community Council meeting:

The next scheduled meeting of the Kitsap Regional Community Council Executive Board is from 8 to 10 a.m. March 22 in the main meeting chamber of the Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 Sixth Street, Bremerton. A board study session will follow from 10:15 a.m. to noon.

Information night on Central Kitsap School District Montessori program:

The Central Kitsap School District Montessori program will host its annual parent information night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 in the library of Jackson Park Elementary School. All parent and community members interested in learning more about the Montessori program, the curriculum, the learning environment it offers children and guidelines for parent involvement are invited to attend. A visit to Montessori classrooms will be included in the evening’s agenda. The program is for children in grades 1 through 6. U.S. Navy League luncheon:

The Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of the U.S. Navy League will hold its luncheon March 8 at the Bangor Plaza Ballroom at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The pre-luncheon social begins at 11 a.m. and the luncheon starts at 11:45 a.m. and will conclude at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public and is $15 per person and $12 for active duty military. Guy Stitt, president of AMI International, will be the keynote speaker and will draw on his 25 years of naval advisory experience. Volunteers needed for Kitsap County Water Festival:

Volunteers are needed to help with the Kitsap County Water Festival, scheduled for Tuesday, May 3 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. Running since 1995, the festival hosts up to 1,200 students from across the county to learn about the importance of protecting water resources and practical ways to implement water quality measures at home. Volunteers will help with activities, guide student groups and assist with the setup and breakdown of the event. They will be provided with lunch and a T-shirt. Jazz at El Coral in Bremerton:

Saxophonist Mark Lewis will return to his 6 to 9 p.m. Friday time slot of weekly jazz playing at El Coral Mexican Restaurant, 536 Fourth Street, Bremerton. Lewis will feature a guest musician each week with bassist Frank Clayton performing March 4. Music is played on the main floor of the restaurant and there is no cover and it is open to all ages. Railroad history presentation at Sylvan Way library:

Railroad historian Randy Dasho will give a free slide presentation at 2 p.m. March 12 at the Sylvan Way library, 1301 Sylvan Way in East Bremerton. Dasho will discuss the history of the Great Northern, Union Pacific, Northern Pacific and other railroads that traversed the region. He will also share historic photographs of dams, tunnels and towns along the Wenatchee River.
