A report of people living in an abandoned Port Orchard home led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Lakebay woman for an outstanding warrant.

According to a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office report, a deputy went to a home in the 1000 block of Oak Road for a reported burglary on May 11.

When he arrived at the scene, there were two vehicles in the driveway of abandoned house whose owner had died in August. Seven people were found living in the home.

A woman told the deputy she found the home while riding around looking for abandoned homes to live in after she researched “squatter rights” laws. She said it was legal to move into an abandoned home, but the deputy said it was illegal to enter a home without permission.

When the deputy ran data on the group, he found that one of the members — a 23-year-old female — had an outstanding warrant issued from Port Orchard Municipal Court for driving under the influence and a $5,000 bond. She was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County Jail.

The sheriff’s office also reported a 50-year-old Sumner woman was arrested May 11 for drug possession.

About 11:39 p.m., deputies stopped a truck on Jackson Street and found drug paraphernalia — including a glass pipe — inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and booked on two counts of drug possession. Bail was set at $25,000.
