Calm traffic
Bainbridge Island is planning to put traffic calming devices on Grove Avenue between High School Road and Wyatt Way this spring.
Public Works has prepared a $94,000 preliminary plan that would include traffic circles at pinch points.
The measures will address safety conditions on Grow for people who are walking and biking. They will also mitigate spillover traffic during Madison Avenue project construction.
Snow woes
Snow and inclement weather caused havoc in Kitsap County Feb. 15.
Schools were closed in South Kitsap, Central Kitsap, Bremerton and North Kitsap. Bainbridge schools were two-hours late.
Olympic College in Bremerton and Poulsbo also were closed.
Some roads were closed in South and North Kitsap.
Garbage and recycling collection services were closed or delayed.
County offices were delayed two hours.
Kitsap Transit was on emergency routes in South, Central and North Kitsap, along with Bainbridge.
Record price
Rice Fergus Miller (RFM) announced the sale of the building containing its headquarters office in downtown Bremerton Feb. 8 for a record $6 million.
The 18,961 square foot commercial building at 275 Fifth St. is the highest price per square foot on record in Kitsap County, listing agents at Marcus & Millichap said.
The building is occupied by RFM, Sazan Group and Ad-Vintage, a vintage and collectibles retail store. RFM will continue to operate in the building under a long-term lease with the new owner.
The building was originally constructed in 1947 as a Sears. Updated since then, it features many resource-conserving measures including rainwater capture for reuse in toilets and irrigation, resulting in a 71% reduction in potable water use; 95% reuse of major structural elements; an on-site solar array and energy-saving measures that reduce energy use by 77%; and a selection of sustainable, low-VOC, and recycled content materials.
In addition to serving as an architectural firm headquarters, RFM will continue to offer its central office space as a meeting venue for local community groups and nonprofits.
Work parties
The Great Peninsula Conservancy will have work parties at the Grovers Creek Preserve starting Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Other work parties there will take place March 30, April 20 and April 22.
During the work parties, volunteers will be building habitat piles and constructed logs to support small animals and promote forest regeneration by mimicking nurse log conditions during decomposition. The goal of “The Coarse Woody Debris Countdown” is 28 of the habitat features by Earth Day.

About 10 poets will read samples of their work at 6:30 p.m. March 14 at Eagle Harbor Book Co. in Winslow.
