Boys basketball: Martinez’s 24 points helps Wolves defeat Juanita

South Kitsap's 47-38 win Friday helps it secure fourth place in Bellevue College Holiday Tournament

BELLEVUE — There are disadvantages to not regularly seeing certain teams.

One of those is knowing that fouling South Kitsap senior guard Nars Martinez late in games is not a good idea.

Martinez took advantage of the situation as he converted 7 of 8 free throws in the final 53 seconds to help the Wolves secure fourth place in the three-day Bellevue College Holiday Tournament with a 47-38 win Friday against Juanita.

Martinez, who scored a game-high 24 points, tied the game, 33-all, when he was fouled on a drive and finished off the three-point play with 4:09 left. That started a 14-1 run for South.

The Wolves (6-3) then took the lead when junior guard Kellen Traxel hit a 3-pointer with 3:46 remaining. It marked the seventh — and final — lead change of the game.

“These guys are a resilient group,” South coach John Callaghan said.

The Rebels (3-7) shot just 32.7 percent from the field and did not have a player score in double figures.

“We’re playing good defense and we’re rebounding,” Callaghan said.

The Wolves finished the tournament with two consecutive wins — they also defeated Renton on Thursday — after losing their opening against Bear Creek.

“I think we’re starting to play with some confidence and understand where everyone fits,” Callaghan said. “There’s definitely an understanding of what we want to do. I like how we’re playing right now.”

This concludes the nonleague portion of South’s schedule. The Wolves return to league to Class 4A Narrows League play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Bellarmine Prep.
