Beast & Belle ring in the holidays

While most theaters in Kitsap County are focusing on presentations with a holiday theme, from the Roving Player’s “A Christmas Carol” to Ovation’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” one theater is telling the “tale as old as time.” Central Stage Theatre of County Kitsap presents “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” opening Nov. 24 and running through Dec. 17.

Central Stage Theatre of County Kitsap presents “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” opening Nov. 24 and running through Dec. 17.

With its catchy songs, lavish costumes and simple yet engaging story, community theater groups have been salivating to produce “Beauty” for years. It wasn’t until last year that the Disney Corporation released it for public use, allowing Musical Theatre International to provide licensed copies while the show was still playing on Broadway. Two other local theater groups have produced the Broadway version of “Beauty” since its release, first Western Washington Center for the Arts in Port Orchard, followed by Ovation! Musical Theatre of Bainbridge.

Gary Spees directs the CSTOCK production, in his fourth time in the director’s chair.

Niki Trostad plays Belle, the bookish but beautiful village girl who tries to save her father from the horrible beast, only to be captured herself.

Kenneth Miller plays the self-centered prince who is turned into “The Beast” by a witch to teach him a lesson in humility. He has until the last petal falls from a red rose to discover the true meaning of love.

Jeff Barnes plays Maurice, Belle’s doting father who is an absent-minded inventor.

Ed Jacobs plays Gaston, the village bully who has a jealous eye on Belle.

One of the most magical things about this story, particularly as told by Disney, is the whimsical cast of animated household objects, which are prone to fits of singing and dancing.

Ryan Demerick plays Lumiere, the butler turned candelabra, while Dale Orzalli plays the portly cook turned tea pot, Mrs. Potts, and Charles Platten is Cogsworth, the clock. Actors playing other notable characters are Colton Myers as Lefou, Amanda Marley as Babette, Jonathan Enlo as Chip, Bethany Camarata as the Wardrobe and Daniel McLean as Monsieur d’Arque.

Twenty-four more performers fill in as villagers and the chorus.

Kim Enloe directs the music, which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the Disney movie or video.

“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” opens Nov. 24 and continues weekends through Dec. 17 at the CSTOCK Musical Theatre at the Silverdale Community Center, 9729 Silverdale Way NW, Silverdale.
