Author Jonathan Evison headlines busy October for Manchester Public Library

By SUSAN LAVIN

Manager, Manchester Public Library

We are excited to welcome Jonathan Evison to Manchester Library Monday, Oct. 19!

Jonathan will be joining the regular meeting of the Bookworms, our discussion group that meets each month on the third Mondays at 7 pm. The title to be discussed, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, is the Kitsap Regional Library choice for the One Book, One Community program. We ask everyone in Kitsap County to read the same book and then have events and opportunities to discuss it at various sites throughout our community.

Evison is a Kitsap resident and the novel takes place in areas that you will recognize as being local. It has two unlikely heroes traveling together:  one has suffered incredible loss, the other is a troubled teenager. They encounter challenges, surprises and what it means to truly care for another person.

The movie rights for this unconventional title have been bought, so look for it in theaters in the near future.

Crocheting is taught at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Our instructor, Kristin, focuses on the beginner, but experienced crafters are also welcome. Kristin plans projects such as hats and scarves for the winter and spring. She also is teaching knitting at our Port Orchard site Nov. 10, also at 6 p.m.  Please sign up at the branch.

John Barutt, master composter, will be at Manchester 6 p.m., Oct. 26, to present successful techniques and hear your “rot-related” questions.

Miss Serena has Family Storytimes at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. She has great stories and fun activities for young library users to enjoy. We will be having a special STEM Halloween event at 4 p.m. Oct. 28. Celebrate the holiday by making some slimy concoctions and other spooky experiments; for grades K – 5. Please call to register.

Lego Club continues on third Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 and Nov. 18. Come dig into our massive Lego collection to make original Lego creations, then show and tell afterward.  This activity is for grades K -6. Please register ahead of time.

Miss Serena will hold a special Halloween family story time at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 27. Wear your costume and join us for not-so-scary stories, crafts and a parade in the Library — trick or treat at the front desk!

We will be having magic of the science kind at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 4. Jeff Evans, a science magician, questions the way objects behave and then reveals the scientific reason behind them.

The Friends of the Manchester Library will be having a book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 in the meeting room of the Library.

Puppets Please will be at Manchester at 11 a.m. on Nov. 14. These colorful, handcrafted marionettes sing, dance, roller-skate and may even nibble on shoes in their show.

The Friends of the Manchester Library invite you to a benefit for the Library from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Manchester Grill. Find out which wines to serve with your Thanksgiving feast. Heavy appetizers will accompany the wines. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at the Manchester Library.  Seating is limited so get them early.

Much is happening in Manchester at the Library.  Come and check us out!
