‘Cruz’ on down the road

Seems like every street fair lately has a requisite display of classic cars, lined up hubcap to fender, owners with chamois cloths at the ready to wipe off drool and fingerprints, but Port Orchard is the site this weekend of a festival built around custom cruisers. It’s actually a trifecta, with a classic car cruise through town the evening of Aug. 12 and a street fair and car show Aug. 13. All three have different sponsors.

Festival by the Bay, sponsored by Fathoms O’ Fun Festival, will feature a street fair lining Bay Street, with many car-related booths. Just around the corner, the Port Orchard waterfront will sparkle with hundreds of vehicles amassed for “The Cruz.” That rhymes with bruise, not fuzz.

The Cruz is sponsored by the Saints Car Club of Port Orchard, which has hosted the popular event for nine of the Cruz’s 19 years.

Many of the cars on display belong to members of the local group, but others will come from farther away, especially if the weather is cooperative.

The weekend starts with an event that was begun last year by the South Kitsap Rotary, the “Rock Around the Block” cruise through downtown Port Orchard.

Cruisers will drive through town beginning at 6 p.m., then gather at Waterfront Park for a 7 p.m. dance party with The Afrodisiacs, a ‘70s cover band from Seattle.

SK Rotary Vice President Larry Berbitsky said they developed the idea of the “Rock Around the Block” event to give the car enthusiasts from out of town something to do while they’re in town.

The Rotary will provide hot dogs, pop, ice cream and chips for spectators, who will pay $5 to get the chance to see the cars close up.

Berebitsky said last year they charged $15 for the show, but decided to lower the price this year to make the festival more accessible to all visitors. And, “we’re trying to make a little money for activities and the scholarship fund.” Monies raised will go toward those funds.

Festival by the Bay takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Bay St., and features more than 40 vendors selling everything from food to car memorabilia. Music for the festival is provided by local rockers Loose Gravel and the Quarry, sponsored by Moondog Bar and Grill. They will play from noon to 4 p.m. on an outdoor stage.

Festival by the Bay organizer Jessie Turner said new this year is a dunk tank.

“We’re going to do our best to find important persons to dunk for fun and money,” she said. No word on volunteers yet.

Festival by the Bay and the Cruz are free, which is a good price for admiring the thousands of hours of sweat equity that goes into making cars like this look better than new.
