A little skin for a good cause

KINGSTON —  While most of the men for the Calendar Guys of Kingston project were a bit shy to strip to their shorts, the women for the female version of the calendar had no problem showing their skin.

The Kingston Revitalization Association’s latest calendar, featuring the women of Kingston suited up in their fine bathing wear and posing in eye-catching locations around the Little City by the Sea, is now for sale in Kingston businesses and is becoming quite the talk of the town.

While the men’s version was a bit more suggestive, the 2006 calendar is not quite as bare but just as fun. And several of those who participated had no problem posing for photographer Sally Christy.

Susan Ladd, a library assistant at the Kingston Library, is pictured with her daughter, Kim Campbell, at Campbell’s floral shop, Rugosa Rose in Port Gamble. While the end result was nice, Campbell was a bit hesitant to comply at first. But when Ladd got word about the project, she convinced her daughter to do it with her.

“It was sort of, ‘If you do it, I’ll do it,’” Ladd said.

Sacks Feed and Garden manager Cathleen Taylor was more than happy to strike a pose for the good cause and it shows in her big grin captured for November.

“I’m 53 years old and I want to look at something 20 years from now and smile,” she said about why she decided to do it.

The only reason she was hesitant at first was because she typically isn’t comfortable in front of a camera, but it was easy to relax with Christy, Taylor said.

“Sally’s personality is just infectious,” she said. “You can just trust her from the get-go.”

And while Sacks Feed and Garden owner Dave Hildebrand wouldn’t participate in the men’s calendar, Taylor and Christy both chuckled at the fact that Hildebrand enthusiastically took care of the props and shoot set up at the shop for Christy.

Kingston Historical Society member Harriet Muhrlein seemed to bare the most skin in her pose for July with resident Annemarie Olson in their patriotic gear.

“Just for the pure fun of it,” she said about why she did it, as well as to help promote the growing historical society. “It just sounded like it would be fun and it was.”

It was easy to get volunteers for the women’s calendar, Christy explained, noting there were 40 women who wanted to do it but only 28 were needed.

Proceeds from the sales of the calendars will help pay for the flower baskets that grace the light posts of Kingston.

“I hope it’s a good money maker this year,” Christy said.

KRA may do a calendar next year of the scenic locales in the Little City by the Sea and the following year, a calendar of local kids and their pets.

But, “we’re done with the nudy-tooty stuff,” Christy said.
