60 neighborhoods sign up for disaster preparedness seminars

Map Your Poulsbo Neighborhood April 19, 23 at Poulsbo City Hall; online registration ends April 17

POULSBO — Sixty neighborhoods — each represented by two or three residents — have signed up as of this date to participate in the Map Your Poulsbo Neighborhood seminar April 19 or 23 at Poulsbo City Hall.

Limited space remains available, volunteer coordinator Kim Colebrook said. Online registration at www.kitsapdem.org closes on April 17.

The earthquake preparedness program builds on the established Map Your Neighborhood program developed by the state and county emergency management departments and is being presented by the City of Poulsbo and Kitsap Department of Emergency Management.

The seminars will provide registered teams with “Map Your Neighborhood” tools to help neighbors be prepared to be first responders in the event of a natural disaster. Teams will learn how to work with their neighbors to identify a neighborhood gathering site and a neighborhood care center; make an inventory of neighborhood skills, equipment and supplies; map the location of gas meters and propane tanks; and develop a neighborhood contact list.

Teams can choose from one of the following seminars: 6:30-8 p.m. April 19, or 10:30 a.m. to noon April 23.

These seminars will be supported with door prizes from Central Market, Peninsula Fire, Safeway, Coast to Coast, and Coffee Oasis. Prizes will include smoke alarms, gloves, flashlights, reflective rain gear, mini first aid kits, coffee, and groceries.

BKAT will record the April 19 session for broadcast at 10:30 p.m. April 20, 11 a.m. April 22, 11 p.m. April 24, and 1 p.m. April 29.

In addition, the North Kitsap Herald — a seminar sponsor — produced a local Disaster Preparedness Guide which is available in the April 8 edition and online, and will be made available at the seminars.
