If you’re a kid growing up in the military, you know the drill. You get to see the world, you get to see your parents serve your country, but you’ll always be on the move. It can get lonely when you and your friends are always saying goodbye.
For kids in Bremerton, that can make it hard to find a buddy on the playground.
It’s a struggle Scott Cashman sympathizes with, which is why he’s teaming up with the Naval Early Learning Center PTA to raise money for a Buddy Bench.
“This is a simple way to take some stress off a kid who might not otherwise feel comfortable reaching out,” Cashman says. “That’s awkward for everybody, whether you’re 6 or 60!”
The concept is pretty simple: if a child wants a playmate but is nervous about asking directly, they can sit on the Buddy Bench. Before long another child will invite them to play.
“Bremerton is a high transition area, and for many kids English is not their first language, so the Buddy Bench will hopefully make things a little easier,” Cashman says.
Quotes for Good
To raise money for the Buddy Bench, Cashman has started up his Quotes for Good Program. For every person who gets a quote from his State Farm Agency, regardless of purchase, he’ll donate $10 to the PTA. So stop by for a quote today!
“People who don’t have anything to donate can still be part of a group that makes something good happen,” Cashman says. He’s had great success with the Quotes for Good Program already, partnering with Meals on Wheels Kitsap, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the Backpack Brigade, the Kitsap Humane Society, and other local organizations.
Cashman grew up in the area and has been working with State Farm since 2012, but the agency is a new step, and a new opportunity to help in his community.
“I really believe it’s a responsibility of the community to support public schools, and that includes local businesses,” Cashman says. The Buddy Bench is one way to make sure children in Bremerton get the support they need.
