It was a killer show.

Featuring the storied Schoolyard Heroes/Kane Hodder combo, Ken Parker and Animal Oufit opened last Saturday at the newly revived West Bremerton venue — the Bremerton Dome.

The kids turned out in the hundreds. And they were loving it.

Yet, I’m still a bit reluctant to write this piece. Reluctant because it seems for the show’s proprietor — local all-ages show promoter Big Mouth Music — everytime they get something good going, something always goes awry.

Josh Kennedy, the force behind Big Mouth has been throwing all-ages shows in the area for years. He started in the early 90s at an indoor skate park in Port Orchard, then moved to the Roxy Theater in Bremerton when the skate park fell through, then, when the Roxy owners wouldn’t have it anymore, he moved on to the Coffee Oasis on Burwell Street.

When the Coffee Oasis decided to stop doing shows a few years back, Big Mouth moved on to renting out local halls, like the Sons of Norway in Bremerton, the Grange Hall in Brownsville, the VFW in Central Valley and most recently Jackson Hall in Old Town Silverdale.

Surveying the crowd Saturday at the first Big Mouth show at the Bremerton Dome, Kennedy noted the amount of people in attendance would’ve packed Jackson Hall wall-to-wall. But in the Dome, it was comfortable, with room for more.

The stage is located on the uppermost level of the three-tiered dome, while the lower levels provide concessions, tables and chairs all inside one big open space. It was designed to be a night club-like venue when it was built back in the late 70s early 80s, Kennedy said, but it hasn’t been used as one since.

It seems like a well-tailored place for an all ages venue, tucked off of Kitsap Way, away from the neighbors, with room for the kids to go crazy and a place for parents to hang out, too.
