Toasting Mom with a glass of bubbly

Monica’s Waterfront Bakery in Silverdale offers an interesting ode to mother’s day.

If there’s one thing that Monica’s Waterfront Bakery is known for, it’s the pastries.

Succulent cinnamon twists, taste bud-beguiling bear claws, mouth-watering morning glory muffins, scrumptious scones and savory quiche … we’ll have to leave it at that because my mouth is starting to water just thinking of all the deliciousness.

Monica’s is also known for its gourmet box lunches, soup and sandwich combos, natural and locally produced ingredients in addition to its periodic Friday Night “wine downs” and other parties.

One thing the Old Town Silverdale bakery is not known for, however, is being open on Sundays.

That’s typically the shop’s only day off, owner Monica Downen said.

But that’ll change for one day only May 11, in an ode to mothers throughout the county, as Monica’s hosts a Mother’s Day Champagne brunch from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.

“It’s the only Sunday we’ll ever be open,” Downen said.

Tickets for the Champagne Brunch are $19.95 and available by reservation only. Tables are going fast, Downen noted, call (360) 698-2991 or e-mail info@waterfrontbakery.com to reserve one.

Reservations are absolutely necessary, Downen said, because Monica’s Bakery isn’t your typical made-to-order restaurant. In addition to making and baking it’s own pastries and other baked goods onsite, Monica’s is also an avid supporter of local and eco-conscious ingredients across the board.

Much of the bakery’s produce comes from a local organic farmer named Paul Gregory, its coffee comes from a Kitsap supplier, Personal Roast, and the bulk of its dairy comes from the local distributor Puget Sound Dairy, in addition to local honey and local sodas also on shelves.

The Mothers’ Day Brunch May 11 will feature the bakery’s most popular items — a choice of Monica’s quiche, a bounty or organic fresh fruit or a basket of freshly baked pastries.

“And a little glass of something sparkly is always nice,” Downen said.

The brunch will be served with coffee or tea and glass of sparkling wine (or organic sparkling juice for those who don’t drink before noon). WU
