Electricity came to Kingston in about 1930.
The featured photo this month is of Richard K. Odell III and his six-horse team. Odell had the contract to pull the electric cable from across Puget Sound to North Kitsap.
The power station was situated on the land between Mary Lou Lane and James Way, south of President Point in South Kingston.
Getting electricity to the community involved many hands. Frank Longmate was one who harvested and peeled poles for the lines. He also helped place them from South Kingston to Streibel’s Corner.
At first, individual homeowners could have electricity in their homes only if they owned an electric stove. Elmer Longmate remembers that his grandfather purchased and electric stove to have electricity. The stove was never connected.
Glance at the Past will feature a local baseball team in the March edition thanks to a contributed photo.
