FREE PET SPAYING/NEUTERING

Animal Rescue Families will be giving out 100 certificates for free spaying/neutering for dogs and cats.

The organization will be offering the certificates every Sunday this month, beginning tomorrow, Jan. 13, at Petco in Bremerton from noon to 2 p.m. only. There is a four-pet limit per family. The surgeries will be performed by three local veterinarians. The program is available for adult cats and kittens and puppies older than 3 months. Adult dogs can weigh no more than 60 pounds. PLAYGROUND FUND-RAISER

Brownsville Elementary PTSA is selling memorial bricks to help raise funds for their playground renovation. The bricks are $50 each and orders must be in by Thursday, Jan. 31. Wright Masonry has graciously donated labor and materials and bricks will be installed in the front courtyard. All community members are encouraged to purchase a brick for their famililes, businesses, etc. and be a part of the Brownville legacy. Order forms can be obtained at the Brownville School office.

LEADERSHIP KITSAP APPLICATIONS

Leadership Kitsap is taking applications for the Class of 2009. The application deadline is March 31 for the intensive 10-month training program.

Leadership Kitsap is ideal for those interested in becoming more knowledgeable about the Kitsap area and learning how to make a positive impact in civic issues affecting the community. Applications can be picked up at the Leadership Kitsap office located inside of the United Way of Kitsap County building, located at 647 4th Street, Bremerton. AWARD RECIPIENT

Soroptimist International of the Greater Bremerton Area has selected 17-year-old Amber Hoak of Poulsbo as the recipient of the 2007 Violet Richardson Award. The annual award recognizes young women between the ages of 14 and 17 for volunteer service to their communities.

Hoak has volunteered at Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale for the past three years and has accumulated more than 450 hours of service. She aspires to attend a four-year university and to be involved in the medical field.

She believes it is not only important to volunteer, but to be an advocate of service as well. Hoak is a North Kitsap High School Honor Society president and Associated Student Body (ASB) representative. She also is involved in the Miss Kingston Scholarship Pageant, which allows her to make a difference in her community and inspires her to make a difference in people’s lives.
