The right attitude goes a long way

I was unemployed for nine months and couldn’t afford my mortgage payments. I’m employed again with a 30 percent reduction in pay. My bank approved a loan modification.

However, they wouldn’t negotiate the second, which they own too. I asked them to bundle the loans with a payment I can afford. They declined because different investors were involved.

After my Chapter 7 bankruptcy, they attached a foreclosure letter to my home on Friday the 13th. A few days later I received multiple FedEx copies. I guess my bank thought it worthwhile to to pay someone to drop off a copy for effect.

The letter, strangely enough, shows another lender as the owner. Only my name was correct. Later, the letter claims government files were updated in 2010. However, my bank bought my loan three years ago. I guess the balance sheet looks better when paying filing fees last minute.

I’m moving on. The bank can have my home.

I’m saying goodbye to $250,000 in mostly interest payments to move into an apartment I can afford, while trading yard work for a hot tub!

As our world values money over law and life, it’s comforting to know we can still choose the right attitude.
