Thanks to all who have helped

Regarding the story about the north entrance welcome sign into Silverdale (“What’s in a name?” Feb. 11), the sign was built in January, 2004 by my son, Joshua Sykes, and Boy Scout Troop 1541.

It is Joshua’s Eagle Scout project and was to be maintained by a service club and two county organizations.

Thanks to Mary Earl, community leader, who stepped up to organize restoration and a facelift for the sign.

Several organizations and individuals have been contributing to the project as well, including Barry Iles, community leader, thank you; crew members of the USS Stennis played a major role, thank you; county Commissioner Steve Bauer, thank you; Silverdale Chamber of Commerce, thank you for your help.

Thanks to all who are really committed to  making Silverdale a special place.

Football brain injuries

Players suffer for our entertainment

Now that it’s been established that a certain number of football players end up with brain injuries that will affect them for the rest of their lives, football games continue.

These players and their families have been warned by doctors for years that the banging of their heads or helmets over and over again can result in very serious brain injuries.

Just recently a well-known football player, who had been diagnosed with injuries to his brain, committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, with the result that his brain be used for research and study.

How sad that a person must give up his life to call attention and make society aware of such a sacrifice for the entertainment of the nation.
