KRL has managed resources wisely

Agreed, one might wonder why in the world Kitsap Regional Library would request a lid lift to the current levy.

But if one closely examines how they are managed, and what our libraries actually provide to us, they would reconsider.

First and foremost, KRL has a record of fiscal responsibility.

They have managed to live within their means and have balanced their budget in 2009.

Secondly, they are a significant public resource. Roughly 3,700 people pass through the doors of the various branches each day.

And here’s what they’re getting — access to computers for job searches and résumé writing; study areas for youth; story times for parents and children; and needless to say, all the books, CDs, and DVDs that can be borrowed instead of purchased.

Most of us do not object to paying in to something if we can see the benefit.

With the lid lift, the typical taxpayer will see an increase of about $3 per month.

This adjustment allows our library system to restore its hours to patrons, make technology improvements, and expand or replace its facilities.

Kitsap residents need the resources of our libraries — now more than ever.

Vote yes for our libraries.
