POULSBO — Wood-pecker Tree Farm, owned by Gerald Reitan north of Poulsbo, is one of four family-owned tree farms nominated for 2013 Washington Tree Farmer of the Year.

The award is administered by the Washington Tree Farm Program, a group of small-forest landowners, and is based on the farmer’s stewardship, management plan, timber health, innovation and community involvement.

The winner of the 2013 Washington Tree Farmer of the year will be announced April 26 at the Washington Farm Forestry Association annual meeting in Tacoma.

Nominations for Tree Farmer of the Year are made by local WFFA chapters and volunteer inspectors, and the winner is selected by the Washington Tree Farm Program.

According to Woodpecker Tree Farm’s nomination, “Reitan and his family allow hikers, horseback riders and birders regular access to their 64-acre farm north of Poulsbo, which they’ve owned for more than 50 years. Reitan makes his farm available for forestry workshops and even community events like North Kitsap’s ‘Art in the Woods.’”

The other nominees are Kristoferson Farm, Island County; Hillcrest Tree Farm, Lewis County; and Miller Tree Farm, Thurston and Grays Harbor counties.
