PORT GAMBLE — A new store in Port Gamble is putting North Kitsap in stitches. Quilted Strait, which was moved lock, stock and barrel from Port Angeles, opened last month in the converted Old Stables building in Port Gamble’s business district.

Owner Kris Cornell said moving the store, named partly in honor of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to Port Gamble wasn’t a difficult decision. The move puts her closer to her children and grandchildren, who live in Oregon. The space itself was the selling point.

“We have a really nice retail space and we still have all the flavor and charm of the old building,” Cornell said.

The store is brimming at its seams with anything and everything a quilter would need to begin the hobby or finish a project. For that, it has developed a loyal following.

Avid quilter Nancy Lefcoski drove from Port Angeles Wednesday morning to root through quilting supplies, her friends Bonnie Davies and Dora Trotter in tow.

Though she has enough quilting things to last her if she lives to see 200, according to Davies, she continues to shop at Quilted Strait anyway.

“They have fantastic fabrics and they’re nice to their customers,” she said.

For Cornell, the quilting shop offers the best of both worlds.

“It’s a great advantage because I run a business that allows me to be creative and play with colors,” she said.

All quilters are welcome, from beginner to expert, Cornell said. Those who don’t know a thimble from thumbtack can take quilting classes beginning May 8.
