He started when he was about 16 years old and has never stopped. Although some cringe at the thought of donating blood, it’s become part of a routine for 62-year-old Leonard Newsom of East Bremerton.

“It’s important because not everyone can do it,” Newsom said. “At some point you may need it.”

    By Kristin Okinaka • March 11, 2011 7:29 pm

For some, spring may mean cleaning, more hours of daylight or the daunting task of filing tax returns. But for Angelia Myers of Silverdale, the task is far from daunting — she knows where to get help.

“I’d rather let someone else take care of it,” Myers, 46, said. “I know I would make a mistake.”

Hank Sykes was sweeping up in the radio station in San Antonio, an orphan, a teenager not yet of high school age, when his Hollywood moment arrived.

They needed him, young Hank had to go on the air.

The boy with a penchant for broadcasting — he was transfixed by a transistor radio set as a youngster — took to the airwaves and introduced himself to the world as Mann, Hank Mann.

Central Kitsap teen fights rare tumor
    By Kristin Okinaka • March 4, 2011 7:35 pm

Rian Anderson likes to watch movies. She hangs out with her boyfriend. Sometimes she gets into fights with her younger sister. From afar, she seems like an average teenager. However, much of her days are consumed with being in physical pain — and the uncertainty of whether it will get better.

“I wanted to be a nurse,” said Anderson, 19, of Crosby in Central Kitsap. “I tried to be a nurse after my surgery but they said I couldn’t do it because I can’t lift people or change sheets.”

Gwen Guidici draws inspiration from the beauty of her surroundings. Then she paints it. And then it’s turned into a Mac App.

But her work being turned into an interactive game was never the Bremerton artist’s intentions. And at present, she doesn’t have a way to play it herself.

    “I don’t have a Mac, so I can’t download it,” Guidici, 54, said Monday.

CK High helps bridge the ‘achievement gap’
    By Kristin Okinaka • February 25, 2011 7:00 pm

It didn’t happen overnight. It was a long time in the making.
Central Kitsap High School was recognized last week with receiving a 2010 Washington Achievement Award for Closing Achievement Gaps — one of 24 schools in the state and only one of two high schools.
Although the award is based on two prior years of state student testing, officials said bringing the grades of minority students into parity with those of white and Asian students has taken a concerted effort.
“It’s not any one or two years of work,” said Central Kitsap High School Principal Stephen Coons. “It’s a combination of factors.”

Figuring out the boundaries for a proposed incorporated Silverdale will be more difficult than playing “eeny, meeny, miny, moe,” especially for those who live along the Silverdale urban growth area boundaries.
“We understand the passion they have for their community, but we have the same passion for the city of Poulsbo,” said Jim Gillard, 37, who

Kitsap Transit will design and build a bus transfer station on Clear Creek Road near Greaves Way to replace the transit center at Kitsap Mall, a plan transit agency’s Board of Commissioners approved Tuesday.
The temporary stop is a compromise to keep a bus stop near the mall.

The pinging sound of the cash register isn’t typical. The vintage unit looks like it’s just for show, but Sammy Knox, co-owner of McGregor and Company, bought it in working condition at a garage sale the summer before she opened the country gift shop in Old Town Silverdale in 1995. The trusty register has been with her over the years, just as the many friends she’s made along the way.
