The Poulsbo Cemetery received some TLC from a group of 15 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and got to work weeding, picking up trash and clearing grave markers on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Jeff Bauman, co-chair of the Friends of the Poulsbo Cemetery, said the volunteers’ efforts smacked of the community’s can-do attitude.

“Everything went great,” Bauman said. “They brought tools, gardening tools and things and a lot of enthusiasm. It had a community spirit feeling to it.”

Poulsbo-North Kitsap Rotary Club contributed most of the volunteers working to clean the cemetery from 9 a.m. to noon, said Rotarian Paul Vaughan.

“It was a broad group. We had everybody in age from already well-retired folks to the 4-year-old daughter of one of our members,” Vaughan said of the event, which he attended along with his wife Debra. “All ages were represented in there. It’s a really good event.”

Vaughan explained that Rotary is the first organization to adopt a tier at the cemetery through the Adopt-A-Tier program, which hopes to ensure that upkeep continues at the Poulsbo Cemetery into the future.

“We’re happy to continue to support Jeff and his activities,” Vaughan added. “It was kind of sad to see a lot of the cemetery plots not being properly maintained, so it’s a good thing that he and his group are trying to get more organizations involved.”
