SUQUAMISH — A Kingston man was arrested by Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies on a child pornography charge this week.

Parent volunteer for Cub Scout Pack 555 in Kingston, Rick Arthur Roberts, 36, was arrested in the Clearwater Casino parking lot during a Scout outing on Feb. 26.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury this week on a single count of possession of child pornography, said Mark Hunter, the director of marketing and administration for the Boy Scouts of America Chief Seattle Council.

Roberts and Cub Scouts were at the casino on Wednesday to take a tour of the casino’s construction site when he was arrested.

Hunter said Roberts had applied to be an assistant cub master in December, but turned in his application without references. Scout officials had been trying to get a hold of him in order to attain references for background checks, Hunter said.

Because his paperwork was not processed, Roberts was not registered as a scout leader.

Roberts was a parent on the trip and his son is a member of Pack 555. Cub Scouts include boys in first through fifth grade — or 7 to 10 years old.

Roberts was wearing a scout shirt when he was arrested by authorities. Hunter said it is the intent of the organization for only registered members to wear the uniform.

Hunter said they are still trying to obtain as much information as they can.

“We obviously use protection in these type of issues,” he said. “We are going to cooperate fully with authorities as they ask us to.”

He said the council is trying to verify information and work with law enforcement on the matter.

“It is important to us and we take it very seriously,” Hunter said. “We are making an effort to create relations with law enforcement because they do investigate and follow up.”

If convicted, Roberts will face a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
