Play them again, Stoyanovich

Published 12:00 pm Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The Bremerton Symphony Association opens its 64th season Oct. 7 with a program of beloved classics. Even if you think you’re not very knowledgeable about classical music, you will recognize these tunes.

“Encore Repertoire” features Rossini’s rousing “Overture from ‘The Barber of Seville,’” Ravel’s hypnotic “Bolero” and Sibelius’ stunning “Symphony Number Two.”

Elizabeth Stoyanovich, BSA Music Director, begins the evening with a pre-concert chat at 6:30 p.m.

Offerings for the 2006-2007 season are divided into the Classic Series, concerts by the full Bremerton Symphony Orchestra; the Chorale Series, with concerts featuring the Concert Chorale, directed by LeeAnn Campos, the Family Series, with matinee performances and activities to entertain children; Conductor’s Choice and the Bremerton Youth Symphony, under the direction of John Falskow.

Concerts in the Classic Series continue with “Homegrown Talent: The Sequel,” Nov. 4; “Yuletide Memories,” a joint concert with the chorale Dec. 16; “Triumphal Majesty” Feb. 24 and “The Ninth,” May 12, also with the chorale.

There are three concerts in the Chorale Series, the two joint concerts plus “Eternal Light” March 17.

Stoyanovich instigated the Family Series when she became Music Director three years ago as a way to get more families and youngsters involved in classical music.

The first concert is “Spooktacular,” Oct. 22 and features music that children are likely familiar with as movie themes, such as “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The second concert, Feb. 3, is “Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign,” and while audience members under 30 might not remember the oldies song with those lyrics, they will recognize tunes such as John Williams’ “The Empire Strikes Back.”

A special Conductor’s Choice concert April 21 is titled “A Visit From The Old World,” with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Number Four.” The concert is in the evening, but Stoyanovich said it is an extension of the Family Series and includes an “extra entertainment and educational flair.”

The Bremerton Youth Symphony, with musicians from across Kitsap County, performs four concerts. The first is “Great and Small Expectations,” Nov. 5, followed by “Emotive Music,” Feb. 11, the annual Chamber Festival April 15 and “A Grand Finale” May 6.

“Encore Repertoire” takes place 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Bremerton Performing Arts Center, 1500 13th St., Bremerton. Tickets are $22 adults and seniors, $10 youth. Group and family rates are available. Season tickets for all nine concerts are $152 adults, $142 seniors and $76 youth. “Pick six” tickets, for six concerts of your choice, are $120 adults, $110 seniors and $60 youth.
