Port of Kingston eyes big face-lift

KINGSTON — Imagine a performing arts gazebo on the Kingston waterfront, with yards and yards of green grass and not a parking spot in sight. Not too far away, floating with the boats moored in the marina is a kayak building, available for storing the slender craft.

It sounds a little picturesque and perfect for Kingston, at least as far as the Port of Kingston members are concerned.

The port is gearing up to make some changes to the waterfront and marina of the Little City by the Sea, and many will be completed, or at least underway, in the next five years.

“We put $40,000 in the bank each month from our income,” said Port Commissioner Pete DeBoer at the June 7 Kingston Community Advisory Committee meeting. “We have plans, big plans, so we’ve been putting aside money for them.”

Among those plans are constructing a floating kayak and small boat storage building, creating an outdoor performing arts gazebo, moving all parking to an underground lot and expanding Mike Wallace Memorial Park into the current parking lot. One such vision has the park redone with rolling, stadium like hillocks that would provide viewing and seating opportunities for the gazebo while also acting like a standard park.

“We can do better as far as performing arts are concerned,” DeBoer said. “This outdoor theater would allow for larger acts and concerts.”

DeBoer also stressed the need for additional parking, saying that something had to be done as far as creating a new lot.

“We need more parking,” he said. “Parking under Mike Wallace Park is definitely an option we are looking at closely right now.”

These are all short-term goals, and are starting to go through the development process.

As far as future projects are concerned, in the next 10 years, the port wants to complete the underground parking and complete moderate expansion of the marina. Within the next 20 years, the port wants to complete major extensions to its marina facilities.
