‘holiday images’ in song

What could be better than a choir of children singing Christmas songs? How about six?

That’s how many choral groups are on the program for Cappella Choirs’ annual family holiday concert, “Holiday Images,” taking place Dec. 15, 16 and 17 in Port Orchard.

Cappella Choirs is a non-profit music organization that is home to a music center, a five-level auditioned choir program, Kids Choir Club, classes, private lessons and a summer camp. The choirs give four major performances every year, but the Christmas one probably tops the list in popularity.

Stephanie Charbonneau, Cappella Choirs founder and artistic director, leads the girl choirs, while co-founder and pianist Don Stojack leads the boy choirs.

The three concerts feature the Bel Canto Girl Choir and Ragazzi Boy Choir, both for third through seventh graders; Arioso Girl Choir and Prestant Boy Choir, for sixth through 11th graders; and Enchanté, the tour choir, made up of members of the other groups who have passed a rigorous audition.

The Dec. 15 concert also includes the Kids Choir Club, with kindergarten through third grade singers. Any child may join this choir, while the older ones are by audition.

The holiday concerts will, of course, feature popular tunes, from “Do You Hear What I Hear” and “Silent Night” to “The Wassail Song” and a jazzed-up version of “Jingle Bells,” but there will be a few extra treats as well.

The silent film classic, “The Snowman” will be projected on a screen while the singers perform “Walking on Air.”

The older performers will read Christmas stories, interspersed with the singing.

Charbonneau said the stories are not religious in nature, just “things that touch the heart.”

There will be a sing-along portion of every show, for those infected with the holiday feeling.

The choral groups are looking forward to next summer when they will perform at Benaroya Hall in Seattle as part of a mass “American Masterpieces Youth Honor Choir,” which includes choirs from all over the Puget Sound region.

The tour choir is already raising money for its next big trip, Europe in 2008. Charbonneau said they don’t have an itinerary worked out yet but hope to visit and perform in three countries.

“It will be a world-view expanding experience for most of them,” she said.

In the meantime, Cappella Choirs perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 and 16 and 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Cappella Choirs Music Center, 1403 Sidney Ave., Port Orchard.

Tickets are $7 adults, $5 seniors and students. Dessert will be available following the concert for $3. Tickets are available at the center or by phone at (360) 895-3200.
