Three city council seats contested

POULSBO — Barring last-minute candidate filings, the only contested North End offices will be the Poulsbo City Council positions held by Councilman Jim Henry, Councilman Mike Regis and Councilwoman Connie Lord. The outcomes of those races won’t be decided until the Nov. 6 general election because the top two vote-getters in the Aug. 21 primary election automatically advance.

Noll Road Association president Becky Erickson filed for Henry’s seat on Monday, and relative political unknown Joseph G. Price declared his intention to run against Lord on Wednesday.

Planning Commissioner Linda Berry-Maraist filed for Regis’ seat Thursday morning. Berry-Maraist is also chairwoman of the Kitsap Public Facilities District and was a member of the city’s Critical Areas Ordinance working group.

Councilman Jeff McGinty was unopposed as of noon Friday, but his ticket won’t officially be punched until the final filing results are announced on June 11.

For Erickson the decision to run for council is the continuation of a journey that began when her property on Noll Road was annexed into the city more than a year ago.

“The biggest thing is I need to finish what I started,” she said. “I need the position of council person to get information so I can continue to watch to ensure development is done properly.”

Her work on the city’s Critical Areas Ordinance working group and Planned Residential Development working group have been parts of her mission to help city officials set policies that balances the need for growth with environmental protection and keeping the city’s unique character, but the job isn’t done yet, she said.

In other North End races, Port of Poulsbo commissioner Tony DeCarlo appeared to be unopposed in his quest for a third term on the board since being appointed in 1993.

Political newcomer Brian Watne also appeared unopposed in his bid for a Port of Keyport commissioner’s seat.

All of the North Kitsap School District Board of Directors were unopposed in their re-election pursuits as of noon Friday.

Dan Delaney and Ed Strickland both filed for second terms, and no one had filed for the seat being vacated by Catherine Ahl, who announced her intention not to seek re-election in May.

Filing ended at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Kitsap County Courthouse, Kitsap County elections manager Delores Gilmore said.
