Libraries are steaming ahead this summer with mini camps | Check It Out

During summer vacation, youth up to age 18 can sign up at any library branch to keep track of reading hours in order to earn a free paperback book. Completing activities will allow for entry into a drawing for a tablet. Reading 100 hours this summer will earn you a T-shirt while supplies last.

Join us at the library for a variety of events. Note that pre-registration is required for some programs.

Kingston Book Group: July 2, 10 a.m.  Discussion will be on “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice,” by Laurie R. King.

Preschool Storytime: July 7 and 21, 10:30 a.m. Start the week by enjoying early literacy fun with books, song, and rhymes with your preschooler.

Kingston Friends of the Library Meeting: July 8, 10 a.m. There are many opportunities for actively supporting this organization.

Kingston Writers Group: July 8, 6:30 p.m.  Enjoy a friendly, supportive atmosphere to encourage writing. We want to read what you write. Beginners welcome.

Eric Haines: July 14, 10:30 a.m. Haines brings grins to audiences of all ages with his shows that are part rock concert, part comedy show, and 100 percent awesome.

Kingston Friends of the Library Book Sale: July 19, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kingston Farmers Market.

Classics Book Group: July 21, 6:30 p.m. Discussion will be on “The Moon and Sixpence,” by W. Somerset Maugham.

Movie Matinee — “The Lego Movie”: July 24, 1 p.m. Grab the family and head to the library to enjoy a free showing of “The Lego Movie.”

Legos @ the Library: July 24, 3-5 p.m. Love Legos? Bring your friends and enjoy special Lego build-it challenges and free play. For children and tweens.

Kabuki Academy: July 28, 10:30 a.m. At the waterfront gazebo next to the ferry terminal. Explore the enchanting culture of Japan through music, dance and language.

Adult Crafternoon: July 31, 3-4 p.m. The last Thursday of each month will be our crafternoon day. Bring your handwork projects and see our newest craft books.

STEAM Ahead camps

Circuitry: July 2, 1-2 p.m. Elementary-age children may participate in this six-week series of activities to explore different areas of STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

Join Seth, KRL’s BiblioTEC librarian, in this educational and hands-on experience. Put on your engineer cap and build a balloon-powered Lego car! All materials provided. Pre-registration required.

Mini Tech Fair: July 9, 1-2 p.m. Elementary-age  children may participate in this six-week series featuring activities to explore different areas of STEAM. The “T” in STEAM stands for technology.

Art: July 16, 1 p.m. The “A” in STEAM stands for art. Create works of art at the library. All materials provided.

Dr. Dave’s Reptile Safari: July 23, 1-2 p.m. Dr. Dave’s Reptile Safari is the ultimate hands-on and interactive cold-blooded adventure where participants can come face to face with amazing and fascinating reptiles. Dr. Dave is a veterinarian and has geared this educational and hands-on experience for an elementary-age audience.

Western Wildlife Encounters: July 30, 1 p.m. Naturalists from Western Wildlife Encounters will provide an engaging live-bird presentation for young aspiring naturalists.

Mini Tech Fair: July 1 and July 15, 1-2 p.m.  Elementary-age children, join Seth, KRL’s BiblioTEC librarian, in this educational and hands-on experience.

Little Boston Book Group: July 2, 12-1 p.m. Discussion will be on “The Paris Wife,” by Paula McLain.

STEAM — Mike Pratt, Western Wildlife Encounters: July 8, 1-1:45 p.m. Join local wildlife biologist Mike Pratt for an introduction to amazing Puget Sound wildlife.

Son of Reptile Man: July 9, 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Port Gamble S’Klallam Gym. Isaac Peterson continues a family tradition of teaching all ages about cool critters.

Kaleta — Storytelling with African Masks, Drumming, and Dance: July 16, 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Port Gamble S’Klallam Gym.

STEAM — Art: July 22, 1-2 p.m. Create works of art at the library. All materials provided.

Legos @ the Library: July 23, 3:30-5 p.m. Legos offer hands-on fun while building early literacy skills.

Didgeridoo Down Under: July 30, 10:30-11:15 a.m. in the Port Gamble S’Klallam Gym. This high-energy, Australia-themed show combines music, culture, science, animal puppetry, comedy, character building and audience participation.

After-Hours Teen Geocaching: July 31, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Whether you are new to geocaching or a pro, grab some friends and head to the library for an after-hours adventure in and around the Little Boston Library. Snacks too. For ages 13-19.
