A court hearing between the Bremerton School District and American Legion Post 68 over the management of Legion Field has been postponed one week in the hopes that the two groups will resolve their dispute out of court.

The district filed a lawsuit against the Legion after it refused to vacate the field Feb. 17 at the end of a 90-day notice that it was terminating its lease with the Legion.

A Kitsap County Superior Court hearing was originally scheduled for March 11, but district officials said they may reach an agreement on the field’s management before then.

The Legion built the field on district property in 1966 and had been managing it ever since. The district issued a 90-day notice to end the lease in November, citing the deteriorating condition of the field. The Legion and youth volunteers have been refurbishing the field since January and said it will be ready March 15.

Since the lawsuit was filed, district officials and the Legion’s attorney said the parties have had discussions on how to resolve their disagreement. Both the district and the Legion’s attorney Dave Horton declined to comment on what kind of agreement they hope to reach, but said their goal is to avoid going to court next week.

The Bremerton High School baseball team has held indoors practices and rescheduled its first two home games to the fields of opponents.
