KINGSTON — Gordon Elementary School was evacuated at 11 a.m. Feb. 29 after a heating and air conditioning unit fan shorted out, filling several classrooms with noxious fumes.
Afterward, 12 students reported “feeling woozy.” A North Kitsap Fire and Rescue medic stayed with those children while their families were contacted and then explained what had happened so the parents could decide whether their children needed medical attention.
According to sources at the scene, and later confirmed by Battalion Chief Steve Moran, units from Stations 81 and 85 responded to an alarm when one of the school’s four HVAC fan units shorted out. While there was no smoke or fire, classrooms in Pod 4 — the area served by that HVAC unit — filled with noxious fumes and the school was evacuated.
