2018 SK wrestling team highlights newest Kitsap Sports HOF class

The Kitsap Athletic Roundtable has announced the newest recipients of the Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame, which includes the 2018 South Kitsap High School wrestling team that won the 4A state title, along with two families and several individuals.
The HOF class will be honored with an induction ceremony Jan. 31 at noon at the Kiana Lodge in Suquamish. Below is a summary of the recipients.
2018 South Kitsap High School wrestling team – South Kitsap’s wrestling team made history in 2018, becoming the first team from Kitsap County to win a state wrestling championship. The Eaglin brothers, senior Mason Eaglin and freshman Xavier Eaglin, both captured titles for the 170-lb. and 106-lb. weight classes. Beyond the Eaglin brothers, the Wolves won 31 of their 40 matches at the Mat Classic XXX at the Tacoma Dome, securing a league, regional, and state title.
The Lewis Family – The Lewis Family will receive the Bob Fredericks Lifetime Achievement Award. Jimmie White, brother of Kenny Lewis, was a three-sport athlete and became the first African American to start at quarterback for Bremerton High School. White, as a senior, captained the baseball and basketball teams and earned All-State honors as a shortstop. He played in the All-State game, but chose to enter the workforce at Boeing instead of pursuing a career in baseball. Kenny Lewis played baseball at the University of Washington. After his time playing baseball, he went on to work for Washington State Ferries and passed away last year.
The Baumgartner Family – The Rex Brown Distinguished Service Award will go to the Baumgartner Family, which has been investing time in teams, events, and community partnerships to serve athletics around Kitsap County. The family has supported the Hammerhead Wrestling Invitational, high school all-star baseball, softball, and basketball games, and local soccer clubs in Kitsap County. Through the Benik Corporation, the Baumgartners have been able to customize products that support mobility, performance, and recovery, assisting athletes in improving their daily quality of life.
Kelsey Anchors – An Olympic High School graduate, Anchors lettered nine times as a Trojan in soccer, basketball, and softball. She also received All-State honors her senior year as an outfielder and was selected All-County in 2006, 2007, and 2008, as well as first-team All-Olympic League in 2007 and 2008 for softball. She was also named second-team All-Olympic League in 2007 for soccer and named second-team All-Olympic League in basketball for the 2006-07 school year. In college, she was the starting centerfielder for Oklahoma State and was part of a team that made the Women’s College World Series.
Clary Carlsen Jr. – Carlsen was a member of the North Kitsap Babe Ruth Baseball state championship team in 1997. As an athlete at North Kitsap High School, Clary earned nine varsity letters, three each for football, basketball, and baseball. Carlsen played for the late coach Jerry Parrish as a two-way starter, playing quarterback on offense and free safety on defense. Carlsen was team captain and earned All-League selections, leading NK to the state playoffs his senior year. Carlsen also earned All-League selections for baseball under coach Steve Frease, earning a first-team All-State selection as a pitcher. Clary pitched two seasons at the University of Hawaii and was later drafted in the 2004 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, spending two years in the minor leagues and finishing with an overall ERA of 4.34.
Roger Cooper – Cooper is a former All-Narrows League running back and state champion hurdler from South Kitsap. Cooper went on to earn All-American honors as a linebacker at Montana State, where he was a three-time first-team All-Big Sky selection from 2002-2004. He was the Big Sky Defensive MVP in 2004 and is currrently the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Montana. At SK, Cooper rushed for 1,723 yards and 20 TD’s, leading the Wolves to an unbeaten regular season and a berth in the state playoffs. Cooper also played for the SK basketball team and competed in track and field, where he won a state title in the 100-meter hurdles, setting a West Sound record (14.14 seconds) his senior year.
Dan Dittmer – Dittmer founded the track and field program at Crosspoint Academy and has been coaching track and field for 55 years. A Level Two nationally certified USA Track and Field Coach in multiple events, he began coaching in 1972 at Ellensburg High School and later went on to coach at Monroe, Selah, Lake Stevens, Central Washington University, Ridgefield, and Chimacum. He is the current track and field coach at North Mason High School. His honors also include multiple Coach of the Year awards in volleyball, cross-country, and track and field, an induction into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2022, and the North Mason High School Wall of Honor in 2024.
Richard “Dick” Dexter – Dexter will receive the Dick Todd Award, which recognizes a sports official. He began his path to becoming a wrestling referee at Central Kitsap High School. He got in touch with the wrestling association and joined, refereeing wrestling as well as football until 1990. Dexter also refereed Eastern Washington games as well as games at the Kitsap Naval Base. Officiating at various levels, Dexter played a pivotal role in keeping young athletes safe and mentoring them through teaching them sportsmanship and how to develop their skills. Dexter passed away Oct. 8, 2021.
Tim Heins – Heins was a four-year starter and All-League 6’4” guard in basketball for legendary coach Jim Harney at North Kitsap, graduating in 1983. Heins averaged 12 points per game as a sophomore and 18 points per game as a junior, earning 1st Team All-League Honors and leading NK to a 5th-place finish at the state tournament. As a senior, he produced five 30-plus point games and set the single-game scoring record for North Kitsap with 50 points vs. Central Kitsap without shooting a three-pointer, a record that stood until 2022. Heins finished the 1982-83 season, averaging 28.2 points per game, and was named 1st Team All-State. Heins also received Coaches All-American and McDonald’s All-American nominations. Heins and the Vikings handed eventual state champion Olympic their only loss on the season.
Megan Hoisington Flemister was a standout player at Central Kitsap High School, earning Narrows League MVP and First Team All-State Honors in 2006 after averaging 15.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game as a senior. As a two-time All-Narrows selection, she helped the Cougars to the state tournament, earning a 25-point performance in the first round. She went on to continue playing basketball at Seattle Pacific University, where the team went 99-19 during her time there and won multiple GNAC championships, as well as advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, averaging nearly a double-double and ranking herself among the top rebounders in the nation.
Larry Morritt – A 1975 Central Kitsap High School graduate, Morritt competed in football and track during his high school tenure and played college football at Boise State. He ended his football career with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League in 1979. While in high school, he was the starting safety his junior year and a member of the 1973 Olympic Conference Championship. He returned his senior year to start at safety and running back, and was later named the All Olympic Conference Safety in 1974. For high school track, he competed in the pole vault, long jump, high jump, and the 4×100 relay team. Morritt broke the school record for pole vault with a leap of 13-6 and was named Olympic Conference Pole Vault Champion two of three years.
Sam Rucker – A 2007 graduate of Klahowya Secondary School, Rucker became the first Eagle to win a state championship in track and field, earning Class 2A state titles in both the 100 and 200 meter events in 2006. Later on in his senior year, Rucker won state championships in the 200 and 400-meter events and finished second in the 100-meter event in his final high school season. Rucker swept Olympic League and West Central District titles in the 100, 200, and 400 meters in his junior and senior years and still holds Klahowya school records in all three events. He went on to run for the University of Washington track and field team.
Lori Snellenberg – A 1975 graduate of Central Kitsap High School, Snellenberg was a three-year letter winner in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA) where she participated in volleyball and basketball competitions. After the passing of Title IX in 1972, she joined the CK track and field team and contributed to their second-place league finish and third-place district finish. Snellenberg also made two state appearances, placing fifth at state for the javelin event and 4th in state for the 880-yard medley relay.
Dan Smith – Smith was a standout offensive lineman for East High, graduating in 1971. He later went on to play for Olympic College and Washington State University and became the first in-state player to be drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1975, a 15th-round selection. Smith also played baseball in high school, including throwing a no-hitter, and played baseball and basketball at OC.
