The city of Port Orchard and the Port Orchard Rotary unveiled the newly renovated Givens Park multi-purpose sport courts Nov. 24, marking the culmination of a community-driven effort that began with a middle school student’s petition.

The movement to bring a futsal court to Port Orchard started in 2022, when then–middle schooler Isaac Nguyen, now in high school, presented a petition with more than 200 signatures to the city’s Planning Commission. His proposal, supported by his soccer team and local families, helped launch the city’s push to revitalize the underused basketball court and aging tennis courts at Givens Park.

That grassroots effort eventually contributed to a successful state grant application. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office awarded the city a Youth Athletic Facilities grant covering 60% of the project’s estimated $294,000 cost, or about $176,400. The Port Orchard Rotary also committed financial support, along with city funds.

The renovated facility now includes courts for futsal, basketball, tennis and pickleball. The project also added accessibility improvements, new surfacing, enhanced fencing and upgraded lighting to support safe use during daytime and evening hours.

“This project is a shining example of what can be accomplished through strong partnerships and community support,” Mayor Robert Putaansuu said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to provide a space that promotes health, connection and fun for everyone in Port Orchard.”
