The North Kitsap Vikings returned from winter break with a 65-44 victory against Mt. Tahoma Dec. 28.
“We have been off since Dec. 18 so it has been a long time, and they were flat,” coach Karla DeVries said. “We did not play well in the first half.”
The Vikings and T-Birds battled to a 13-13 tie after the first quarter. Teegan DeVries led the Vikings with four points in the paint. Afterward, the offense began to click. Three more Vikings scored, including Coriana McMillian’s last-second three-point shot to give the Vikings a 28-25 lead at halftime. The Vikings ended on a 7-0 run.
The Vikings woke up in the second half and went on a 25-0 scoring run.
“It was the best two quarters we have played all year,” DeVries said. “We made some adjustments with the zone offense and ran that low defender out so we can get it back in the post.”
During the scoring run, DeVries led with seven points, Avery Kline scored six points and McMillian scored five.
“When we start pounding the ball inside, it opened up for our shooters,” DeVries said. “We had more confident shooting in the second half. It was fun to see.”
North Kitsap slowed down in the fourth quarter, running time off the clock. However, the Vikings sealed the game with a handful of baskets from Kline and Claire Inklebarger.
